Motorsports enthusiasts join forces to bring back drag racing at SRP this weekend

Drag racing makes a comeback in the local motorsports scene with the holding of the Drag Wars 2016 Series this weekend at the baywalk strip of the South Road Properties.

Spearheading the event, which starts tomorrow with the practice runs and qualifying round, is organizer Michael Francis Calo Mercado, Ron Sanchez and Ronal Mijares of the Cebu Horsepower Events and Promotions (CHEAP) and Brian Yuson and Arvin Abing of PBA Publishing.

Legal drag racing has been silent as of late in the Queen City of the South, and this is the reason why Mercado and his group decided to pull all the stops to revive the adrenaline-pumping motorsport.

“This event is more like bringing back the excitement of the sport,” Mercado said during the driver’s briefing last Wednesday night at the Cebu Grand Hotel. “We are hoping this weekend’s race will bring back the enthusiasm of local racers.”

Organizers are also hoping to minimize illegal drag racing, which has been rampant during late nights in certain streets of the city.

“We want to give [illegal drag racers] a proper avenue to show off their skills and get them out of the streets for their own safety,” added Mercado,
Drag racing is a sprint race usually between two cars at a time, with the race course being a straight line measuring a quarter mile  (1,320 feet/402 meters).

Electronic timing and speed sensing systems have been used to record race results.

The first leg this weekend is expected to draw around a hundred drivers with some coming from Bacolod City, Cagayan de Oro City, Davao City and Dumaguete City.

According to Mercado, there will be three legs scheduled this year. The second leg is tentatively scheduled in June and the final leg in October.

Noted racers such as Cebuano Vios Cup champion Lord Seno and Jed Neri of Group B, Vincent Navales of Dub City, Bobby Pangilinan of NCR, Ferdie Chua of ACR and Ian Borromeo Classic Autoworx  are among the top names in the race.
