Traffic flow was hampered yesterday in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City as a long queue of vehicles formed outside the Motor Vehicle Inspection Center (MVIC) as part of the process for the renewal of registration.
Claro Lumagas, officer-in-charge of MVIC, said they had accommodated 600 vehicles by 1 p.m. yesterday, but the queue of vehicles still reached about half a kilometer to Mantawi Drive near UC Medical Center.
Traffic congestion was heavy along E.O. Perez St. towards Ouano Ave. and Mantawi Drive as well as on the flyover until the boundary with Cebu City.
“Mohangyo lang una mi sa traffic enforcement sa Mandaue nga mosabot lang una namo kay amo sab paningkamotan nga ma-schedule ni sila og tarong (We are asking the traffic enforcement of Mandaue to bear with us. We will find ways to schedule these vehicles),” Lumagas said.
Vehicle owners have flocked to the MVIC since Monday after the district and extension offices of MVIC in Carcar, Toledo, Medellin, Danao City, Lapu-Lapu City and Talisay City referred all vehicle inspections to the Subangdaku office.
A memorandum from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Manila mandated all vehicle owners seeking to renew the registration of their vehicles to undergo inspection at the MVIC. Lumagas said they implemented this on March 21.
The inspection covers the vehicles’ brakes, lights and horns. The vehicles also undergo a smoke-belching test.
Glen Antigua, operations chief of Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM), said they have deployed more traffic enforcers in the area and warned drivers not to leave their vehicles at the queue or they will be issued with citation tickets.
Diosdado Ranedo, a private vehicle driver of a certain Simplicia Taylor, spent the whole day yesterday at the MVIC. He hoped his vehicle would pass the test so he would not need to return.
