IN THE hopes of helping the youth in his hometown stay away from vices, overseas worker Bienvenido dela Cerna and his brother, Eric, is staging a footrace dubbed as Conquer Top Hills in Carcar City on April 10.
Bienvenido left Carcar City in the early 2000s to work in Australia as a mechanic. He returned to his hometown earlier this year and felt disappointed after learning that a lot of kids are engaged in vices.
Bienvenido said the youth in Carcar used to be very active in sports before he left for Australia and that’s the reason why he and his brother Eric are doing their best to get the kids engaged in sports once again with this running event.
“I was surprised when I got back from Australia that the youth changed. They are not interested in sports anymore. Instead, they engage in vices and some of them are using illegal drugs so I was very saddened. I hope this running event will encourage them to leave their vices behind and start a new active life,” said Dela Cerna in yesterday’s launching at the Captain A’s Restaurant along with his brother, Eric, race director Joel Juarez of Coco Running and technical director Jay Juarez.
The upcoming event will be featuring three-kilometer, 6k and 14k distances. The race will start and finish at the basketball court of Barangay Tipolo while the route takes runners through the hilly and scenic view of Upper Cogon’s hills.
“It’s very rewarding when you get into the top but the run itself is very challenging because you have to traverse trails, rocky terrain and the race course has uphill and downhill portions which will give the runners enough challenge,” said Eric Dela Cerna.
Cash prizes will be given out to the top three winners in each distance.
Registration is going on at the Talisay City Sports Commission office in Talisay City Hall, Santa Catalina Laboratory, Cellular City outlets, Infinitea outlets and Eye Tune Optical. Registration fee is P250 for the 3k, P300 for the 6k and P350 for the 14k.
