AN off-duty policeman was held for questioning at the Minglanilla police precinct last Saturday after he shot down a drunk who reportedly went amok in Barangay Lower Pakigne, Minglanilla town.
But PO1 Melther Kyamko, who is assigned at the Naga City police precinct, will be commended on Monday for going beyond the call of duty.
Police investigation showed that 40-year-old construction worker Eduardo Eleccion, who was then drunk, was brandishing a .38 paltik revolver in barangay Lower Pakigne on Saturday night.
Eleccion was first seen at the vicinity of the Pakigne bridge where a benefit dance is held nearby. He later went to a nearby store and ran amok there, forcing people to scamper to safety.
Chief Insp. Franco Rudolf Oriol, chief of Minglanilla police precinct, said Eleccion threatened some residents at gunpoint.
Pakigne resident Allan Cañedo sought help from Kyamko, who is also a resident of the area, and barangay tanods.
When confronted by Kyamko, Eleccion reportedly ran away which resulted to a brief chase. He then drew his revolver and aimed it at Kyamko and the tanods.
But before he could fire a shot, Kyamko shot Eleccion several times on the body with his 9mm service pistol. Eleccion was already dead when brought to the hospital.
“Let’s just make it clear that it was a legitimate police operation,” Oriol told Cebu Daily News in a phone interview.
