Heavy traffic felt on Lapu side of bridges

TRAFFIC got stalled for most of yesterday at ML Quezon Street in both the Marcelo Fernan bridge and the Mandaue-Mactan bridge on the Lapu-Lapu City side.

One resident, Jacklyn Pino, said she left home in Barangay Pajo for her work in Cebu City which starts at 6 a.m.

“But even before 6 a.m the traffic was already heavy,” she complained.

Pino said she was just thankful that she rode a motorcycle or else she may have been late for work.

Frank Brazil, Lapu-Lapu City Traffic Management System (CTMS) chief, said traffic was heaviest on the Lapu-Lapu City side.

“I don’t know where the vehicles came from. Since Saturday there were a lot of vehicles headed to Mandaue City,” he said.

Brazil said passenger jeepneys slowed down at the foot of the Mandaue-Mactan bridge due to the structure’s uneven surface, aggravating the traffic.

The bridge is undergoing repairs by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

To ease the congestion, Brazil said traffic enforcers were deployed on foot and intersection of the bridge to act as “spotters” while another traffic enforcer was on the bridge to guide motorists and public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers on the Mandaue City side.
