A 12-year-old boy remains in critical condition three days after he was shot in the head when his father accidentally dropped his .38 revolver at their home in Barangay Basak, Mandaue City.

Senior Insp. Alfredo Kuhay Jr., Basak police precinct chief, said James (not his real name) is still comatose at the intensive care unit of the Chong Hua Hospital.

He was accidentally shot in the head after his father accidentally dropped the .38 revolver on the ground while he tried to get the keys of his motorcycle at their home last Saturday.

The 49-year-old father was a former job order employee at Mandaue City Hall before he resigned after his wife went abroad to work as a domestic helper.

The father is detained at the Basak police precinct station on charges of illegal firearms possession and reckless imprudence resulting to physical injury.

He told police that the gun wasn’t registered and it was passed on to him by his father.

“We asked (Mandaue City election officer) Ferdinand Gujilde if this is covered by the election gun ban but he said it is not since the incident happened inside their house. That’s why we only charged him with illegal possession that is bailable,” Kuhay said.

Kuhay said the mother came home from Singapore after she learned of the incident. She is taking care of her son at the hospital.

Kuhay said the father will be released once he posts P60,000 bail. Kuhay said the mother doesn’t intend to press charges against her husband.

“They are not interested to file a case. The mother went here (police station) with their lawyer. They said that they will file an affidavit of desistance,” Kuhay said.
