THE Cebu City Boys’ Under-17 Sepak Takraw team will look to overcome adversaries in unfamiliar territory as they compete in the long 3rd Mayor’s Cup Sepak Takraw National Championships slated June 27 to July 1, 2016 in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.

Head coach Marlon Gicain will lead the Niños’ campaign in the tournament held in line with the city’s 103rd founding anniversary and is staged by the Philippine Amateur Sepak Takraw Association (PASTA) and the city government of Dipolog.

The team will be composed of Palarong Pambansa players from Abellana National School (ANS) and University of Cebu (UC).

John Accento, a UC Webmaster, will be the lone college player for the team.

“I am confident that they will have a big chance to make it to the championship,” Gicain told Cebu Daily News.

Since it is a national championship tournament, elite teams from all over the country will compete. This is also the first time that Cebu City will join in the tournament.

Aside from the U-17 category, the cash-rich tournament will also have an Open Category in Men and Women’s divisions.

Gicain is planning to form a team to compete in the Open Category.

Champions in the U-17 Boy’s category will bag P15,000 while the second and third placers will pocket P10,000 and P7,000, respectively. In the Men’s Open Category, a whopping P30,000 top purse is at stake.
