SCAVENGERS at the Inayawan landfill were ecstatic as they carried sacks filled with used plastic and other recycled materials that they would later sell to junk shops.

Rodito Daogdaog said he can now earn enough to buy rice and viand to feed his seven children. When the landfill closed down last year, the 36-year-old Daogdaog said he can only afford to feed “lugaw (congee)” to his family.

There are still shanties in the landfill occupied by scavengers with their families.
