COFFEE is a brewed beverage we all love!

I grew up in a household where the invigorating aroma of coffee brewing on the stove perked mornings up. And I saw how the preparation of this beverage acquired sophistication as I grew up: from simply boiling the coffee grounds in a pot (Turkish coffee style) where the dark liquid was ladled into cups to a more convenient aluminum “cafetera” where boiling water passes through a metal sieve/basket containing the coffee grounds.

We would later acquire a more sophisticated Corning Ware percolator and finally the modern coffee-maker using filters.

In 1933, Italian Alfonso Bialetti invented the Moka Pot, also known as Machinette (literally small machine) a stovetop or electric coffee-maker that produces coffee by passing boiling water pressurized by steam through ground coffee. It became a style icon in the 1950s and is an essential and fashionable part of most Italian kitchens. In fact, the Moka Pot revolutionized the way of drinking coffee in Italian homes where the tradition of drinking coffee is unparalleled in the world.

Caffe Hausbrandt, an Italian coffee brand, recently opened its first branch in the Philippines in Cebu in Capitol Square along Escario Street. The Ting family of Parklane Hotel, headed by Allan, together with Hausbrandt’s Alessandro Patelli, graced the formal opening of Caffe Hausbrandt, which sounds German more than Italian has over 70 branches worldwide.

Hermann Hausbrandt founded Hausbrandt in Trieste, Italy in 1892. The proximity of Trieste to Austria explains the German-sounding name. A captain of the Austrian Merchant Marine, Hausbrandt started the business that roasted and sold coffee.

Then, his entrepreneurial genius solved great obstacles relating to coffee, transport and storage that ensured the success of his coffee business. After World War II, the company grew primarily due to the efforts of Virginio Zenetti, establishing Hausbrandt as the leader in coffee roasting technology.

Allan proudly introduced his barista who skillfully demonstrated their concept of “BYOC” or “Brew Your Own Coffee” in the caffe using the Bialetti Moka Pot. The barista explained that the Bialetti Moka Pot makes a stronger brew than coffee obtained by drip brewing. It is sometimes referred to as stovetop espresso since its extraction is similar to conventional espresso machines. The flavor of the coffee using the Moka Pot depends greatly on the bean variety; roast level, fineness of grind, water profile and level of heat used. The BYOC can be a choice of Moka or Espresso, Americano, Café Latte and Cappuccino and serving is good for two persons.

Caffe Hausbrandt starts brewing at 8 in the morning, offering a variety of sandwiches, pastas and pastries. It is also ideal for brief meetings with a
conference room available that can accommodate 8 to 10 persons.
