THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers came alive in the fourth period to put down the Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras, 83-73, for their fifth straight win in the 17th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament Sunday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Skipper Josue Segumpan led four Lancers in double-figures with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Sophomore guard Tristan Albina fired in 14, Liberian big man Bassiere Sackor had 12, while reigning MVP Rey Suerte filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
The win, UV’s fifth in six games, enabled it to tie the University of San Carlos at the top of the standings.
Up by a single point, 61-60, at the start of the fourth, the defending champions uncorked a 12-4 bomb that featured crucial makes from Suerte, Albina and Segumpan, whose triple put the Lancers up by nine, 73-64, with six minutes remaining.
A free-throw by Edmundo Bayhonan and a trey from Mac Racho got the Cobras back to within five, but the Lancers refused to budge, retaliating with another triple from Albina and a lay-up by Sheldon Gahi from a sweet post pass from Sackor, which raised UV’s lead to 10 with 2:40 left.
Former San Beda Red Cub Daryl Nazareno paced SWU-Phinma with 15 from five three-pointers but it wasn’t enough to save the Cobras from plummeting to their fourth loss in five tries.
Meanwhile, the University of Cebu’s high school and college squads will be aiming for victories today, to keep their hopes for the Final Four alive. The Webmasters will be taking on the winless Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats while their high school counterparts will be squaring off against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers.
