Small fishers warned: Be extra careful when going out to sea
FISHERMEN using small fishing boats in the Visayas are cautioned from going out to sea amid the prevailing weather systems in the country in the next three days.
Al Quiblat, chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration – Mactan (Pagasa-Mactan), said the strengthened southwest monsoon (Habagat) might cause waves in the coastal waters of Visayas of up to 4 meters high.
The habagat, according to Quiblat, would also bring 30 to 40 kilometers per hour (KPH) winds.
“We would advise them to be extra careful, and if it’s possible, please refrain from going out to the sea while we have these weather systems because small fishing boats cannot really bear with such wind speed and strong waves,” Quiblat said.
Quiblat however clarified that Pagasa-Mactan did not issue any gale warning.
All shipping vessels are in normal operations since the Philippine Coast Guard has not canceled trips.
“So far there was no order for any vessel to cancel their trips as of 1 p.m. today (Sunday),” said SN1 Roger Clyde Agbon, PCG-Cebu Operations staff in a phone interview.
Quiblat said the current weather condition might last until Tuesday, August 7, when the the LPA would be expected to merge with a typhoon outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) with the international name, Shanshan.
