Two confident teams are headed for a monster clash today as the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters tangle with the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in the 2018 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
UC and USJ-R are coming off impressive wins last Sunday, making this an interesting clash between two teams that duked it out in the semifinals last season.
UC routed the University of San Carlos Warriors, 72-50, while USJ-R shocked the reigning champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 89-73.
UC’s multi-titled head coach Yayoy Alcoseba said that he and his wards were looking forward to the game today.
“They are a confident team. We’re a confident team also. It will be an interesting game tomorrow (today),” Alcoseba said.
USJ-R’s new head coach Leode Garcia, on the other hand, is preaching to his squad the value of consistency heading to this marquee match-up.
“We have to be consistent with our gameplan and sustain the kind of execution and intensity that we had against UV,” said Garcia, whose team now boasts of a true man in the middle in 6-foot-10 Segamars Ewenike, who hails from Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the rejuvenated University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers are on the hunt for their second win when they encounter UV in the second game.
USPF head coach Brian Jereza cautioned his players against letting their guard down, much like they did in the conclusion of their game against Southwestern University-Phinma last Tuesday.
“We just reviewed our lapses on our game last night and hope we can adjust when we play the defending champs. I told the boys that if we play like that against UV, I don’t think we can get the win,” said Jereza, who witnessed his team nearly blow a 12-point lead with three minutes remaining.
