We need time to stop, recollect ourselves, notice the warmth of sunlight, the faces of loved ones, the glistening of roads touched by rain, the comforting yearend breeze. We need to stop, see, appreciate and be grateful.
The Church last Sunday celebrated the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.
The feast falls always on the last Sunday of the liturgical year.
Between that day and Christmas, all of us, especially the Christian faithful have plenty of time to take stock of our lives.
The gospel changes for Christ the King each year, but what sticks to my mind is the one of Saint Matthew, when in the end, the king will separate the goats from the sheep.
The sheep represent those who perform the corporal works of mercy for their neighbors as proof of service to the king.
The goats represent those who see the least of their brothers in suffering and ignore them.
That should make us and our leaders pensive. In the end, not even the separation of Church and State will stand.
We will all have to make an account of ourselves before our master.
The questions will be the same for everyone: When I was sick, did you comfort me? When I was hungry, did you feed me? When I was thirsty, did you give me dink?
Let’s hope, pray, and work so that when the time comes, we will answer in the affirmative and hear our king welcome us with the words, “Enter into your reward.”
The reward is his very self, love himself in person.

It will be Advent soon.
At sunset on the first of December, the first candle on the Advent wreath will be lighted.
The first few days will be further opportunity to reflect on the last days, the coming of the Lord.
May we remember this amid the rush of parties, reunions, and other activities that fill our December calendar.
The real meaning of the season is in the Lord who arrives but whose arrival we cannot notice if we simply turn as the world turns.

With hearts of thanksgiving, we can then be ready for the coming of the king as Mary’s boy child.
