Cebu City motorists and public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers were advised anew not to drink and drive especially at night to avoid a repeat of last Sunday dawn’s tragedy at Mabolo, Cebu City.

Footage from four closed circuit TV cameras of last Sunday’s collision between a sports utility vehicle (SUV) vehicle and a passenger jeepney failed to produce a clear image of the motorist responsible for the incident.
“Natan-aw na nato ang kining upat ka CCTV nga ato nakuha sa mga establishments didto’ng dapita gahapon. Dili kaayo klaro gyod ang suspect (We now saw the CCTV footage provided by the nearby establishments in the area. However, the suspect’s face was unclear),” said Supt. Dindo Juanito Alaras, Mabolo police precinct chief.
The collision which occurred at MJ Cuenco Street in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City at dawn last Sunday, Dec. 3, claimed a woman’s life and injured three others.
The lone fatality’s identity had yet to be known.
Alaras said they asked more establishments to turn over whatever security camera footage they have of the fleeing motorist.
He said he hopes their footage will provide a clearer picture of the SUV driver.
In the meantime, Alaras said they will wait on the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to identify the SUV and its driver.
More patrols and random checkpoints will be deployed to prevent similar tragedies, he said.
Alaras said identification of the SUV’s owner takes time because the LTO moved its office in Consolacion town, northern Cebu.
LTO Regional Director, Victor Caindec, said identifying the SUV owner will prove challenging.
“Until such time we see the plate number or conduction sticker, we will have difficulties in the identification. We will leave it to the police to provide us with those necessary data,” Caindec said.
Senior Supt. Royina Garma, Cebu City police chief, called on city residents not to drive when drunk to avoid these accidents.
“Let’s keep this Christmas season safe,” she said.
