Comelec probes claims of police involvement in Cebu City’s politics

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Commission on Elections in Central Visayas (Comelec-7) has heeded the request of Senator Panfilo Lacson to investigate the alleged involvement of police officers in the political scene of Cebu City.

Lawyer Veronico Petalcorin, acting Comelec 7 chief, said in a press briefing on May 9, Thursday, that they were investigating the complaints of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña and Police Colonel Royina Garma, Cebu City Police Office director.

Petalcorin said that he had already assigned the local Comelec office to draft their findings on the issue and submit it to the central office for the final deliberation.

“Gabii gadraft sila sa ilang findings kay nangita sad ang Manila sa unsa ilang observations ato (They were drafting their observations last night, because Manila was looking for them),” said Petalcorin.

Osmeña, the standard bearer of the Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK), claimed that the local police had been attacking local government officials affiliated with his party. 

Petalcorin confirmed that the alleged arson on a dump truck owned by the captain of the mountain barangay of Barangay Bonbon had also been included in the investigation. /dbs
