AT its regular meeting held last March 8, the Board of Trustees of the University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu City unanimously elected Rev. Fr. Dionisio M. Miranda, SVD to an unprecedented third consecutive term (2014-2017) as university president. This was made announced by the Board of Trustees at the conclusion of its meeting last March 8, 2014.
The University of San Carlos is one of the top universities outside Metro-Manila. Its motto is Scientia, Virtus, Devotio. “Scientia” is the Latin word for Knowledge or Learning, both as a process and a product. “Virtus” means Virtue or Moral Character. “Devotio” means dedication or faithfulness to a person, task, or duty because of a vow formally or informally taken.
Thus, USC is committed to developing in its students “Professional Competence” (Scientia), “Nobility of Character” (Virtus) and “Commitment to Social Transformation” (Devotio) through an education that seeks the integral formation of the mind (Scientia), the will (Virtus) and the heart (Devotio). Expressed in another way, USC seeks to develop among its students a commitment to the abiding search for the Truth (Scientia), the desire for the Good (Virtus) and the love for the Beautiful (Devotio).
The initials of the motto are SVD, the same beginning letters of Societas Verbi Divini (Society of Divine Word), the missionary religious congregation which took over the administration of the then Colegio de San Carlos in 1935, guided it through the years until it became the University of San Carlos on July 1, 1948, and continues to administer it until today. Through Scientia, Virtus and Devotio, the SVD shares its Trinitarian Spirituality based on the Father as the Good, the Son as the Truth and the Spirit as the Beautiful.
