The ongoing tree-cutting in barangay Tina-an, Naga City led some local officials to propose that it be done in the evening in order to avoid traffic congestion.
In a press conference early today, Naga City Information Officer Gary Cabotaje said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) should have no problem in moving their tree-cutting at night to avoid inconveniencing motorists.
The tree-cutting done from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. caused a traffic gridlock to motorists coming from the south. Cabotaje said the only problem in working at night is the inadequate lighting.
Four police officers were deployed to make sure residents don’t intervene in the cutting of fallen branches. Residents of barangay Tina-an yesterday join in chopping fallen branches using bolos so they can use them for firewood.
But DPWH said they should be the only team allowed to cut the trees and branches. Cabotaje said the Naga City police is doing its best to minimize the traffic congestion today.
To enable full access to the highway, the operation was stopped at 10:30 am and then resumed an hour later. The road was opened again at 12 noon and closed at 1 pm.
Cabotaje said roads will be opened again at 2:30 p.m. As of 1 p.m. today, no century-old tree has yet been cut. All trees identified by DENR for cutting have only undergone pruning since morning.
