IN celebrating the holidays, Filipinos were advised to take it easy by eating in moderation and avoiding liquor and fireworks.

“We should eat nutritious food. Those who have health problems should cut down on sweet and fatty food,” Asst. Regional Director Dr. Lakshmi Legaspi of the Department of Health (DOH) said yesterday.

She said sweets and fatty foods are dangerous for those suffering from hypertension, diabetes, and heart problems. Legaspi said they should eat fruits and vegetables instead.

Food that is also stored for more than two to three days are not good to eat since it will cause diarrhea.

“Food easily gets spoiled so after two to three days they should be disposed of,” she said.

She also encouraged people to drink eight glasses of water a day and drink calamansi or orange juice to avoid dehydration as well as sleep eight hours a day to avoid stress.

Dr. Legaspi said the unpredictable weather can cause upper respiratory tract infections.

“If a person would experience more than five days of fever, he should consult a doctor for treatment and medication,” she said.

Legaspi said those giving presents to children should avoid buying toys with sharp edges as well as toys that contain strong chemicals.

Firecrackers should also be avoided to prevent injuries and respiratory infections, she said.
