Graveyard shift road work eyed during Sinulog

While it’s willing to cooperate with the Cebu City government, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-7) asked that work on some of their major road projects be allowed to continue at night.
“We understand the city’s concern but we also have a timeline to follow. So if they allow us to work siguro starting evening until 5 a.m., we can do that,” DPWH Regional Director Ador Canlas said.
In yesterday’s 888 News Forum, Canlas said the agency is working on a schedule with city officials to spare residents and visitors from traffic congestion during the Sinulog celebration.
The festival will be launched with a parade on Friday.
Canlas cited the S. Osmeña Road concreting in the North Reclamation Area and V. Rama Avenue undertaken through PLD Construction as examples.
Responsibility
The S. Osmeña Road was scheduled for completion before the Sinulog.
It suffered delays when close to a hundred trees along the center island of the road were uprooted and hauled away in April last year. No party took responsibility for the removal.
Last Monday, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama ordered all roadwork in the city stopped ahead of the Sinulog activities, including those handled by the DPWH.
Rama said he also wants the contractors to make the roads passable and free from obstructions to ensure smooth traffic flow before and during the Sinulog festivities.
A series of nine-day novena Masses begins tomorrow at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño and the city government will hold its Sinulog launching parade the next day.
Canlas said their final working arrangement will still depend on the outcome of their talks with Cebu City officials.
If the city government sticks with their decision, Canlas said they can accommodate the request.
“We will just have to make up for the lost time after Sinulog. We’ll catch up on our timeline,” Canlas said.
