A 16-year-old girl was killed after the sports utility vehicle (SUV) she was riding rammed a parked truck in barangay Dakit, Bogo City, northern Cebu yesterday dawn.
Carmela Abayon was declared dead at the Bogo City Hospital due to injuries in the head and body.
Her aunt, Maria Ann Miraflores Harman, 32, the driver of the Ford Everest SUV had minor injuries.
The SUV was headed for Medellin town when the accident occurred about 1 a.m.
Harman admitted she fell asleep at the wheel and that it was too late for her to hit the brakes or swerve when she noticed the truck parked by the roadside.
The detained truck driver, Robert Abella, 38, said the truck had mechanical trouble.
He said he had placed a reflectorized warning triangle in front and at the back of the truck. Police said the area was dimly lit.
In Danao City, a 12-year-old boy was killed after he was hit by a speeding car in barangay Guinsay.
John Carl Capuyan was crossing the road on his way to school. The driver of the car, Richell Tumulak, 35, of barangay Duljo-Fatima, Cebu City was arrested.
