Some of the country’s top professional and amateur stars will pay homage to their roots as they are set to grace the opening of the 2015 Seaoil-National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) National High School Championships tomorrow at the Ynares Sports Arena.
Purefoods Hotshots forward Ian Sangalang, Global Port star Terrence Romeo, Talk ‘N Text guard Kevin Alas and Rain or Shine wingman Jeric Teng are expected to add spice to an event that gathers the top high school teams in the country in a battle royale that will determine who the country’s best is.
Also tapped to make appearances are current amateur standouts such as Kiefer Ravena, Jeron Teng, Scottie Thompson and Baser Amer to name a few. The opening ceremonies will also see sportsman Joel Lopa, president of the Tao
Corporation and Nokia Philippines, being honored for his role in backing the under-16 and under-18 national teams from 2007 to 2009 as well as an appearance by Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2014 Mary Jean Lastimosa.
The top 18 high school teams from the country, including Cebu’s very own Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, will be divided into six groups. Each team will be playing a round-robin in their group with the top six advancing to the next round where again, they will be categorized in Groups A and B.
They will again play a single round-robin in their group with the top two advancing to the winner-take-all championship.
The tournament will be staged at three different venues – the Meralco Gym, the Ynares Sports Arena and the Philsports Arena.
Among the teams who made it this far are Assumption College (Davao), Southern City College (Zamboanga), St. John’s Institute (Bacolod), St. Roberts International School (Iloilo), Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori (Cagayan de Oro), and
Maryhill College (Lucena). Completing the cast are University of Perpetual Help System (Binan), Naga City Montessori, Lyceum (South Cavite), University of Cordilleras (Baguio), Castillejos National High School (Zambales), Infant Jesus Learning Center for Academic Studies (San Fernando), Gerona Institute (Tarlac), and National Capital Region qualifiers Chiang Kai Shek College, National University, San Beda Red Cubs, and San Beda B.
