Cebu’s Vidal bags gold in Silay karatedo tilt
CEBU CITY, Philippines—Cebuano karateka Rafael Vidal led his team to win four medals in the recently concluded 1st Mayor Joedith C. Gallego Open Karatedo Championship held over the weekend at the Natalio Velez Gymnasium, Silay City, Negros Occidental.
Vidal, a 12th grader of the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Karatedo Team and also a member of the Japan Hayashi-ha Shitoryukai Karatedo Team, bagged a gold medal in the kata (form) category and added a silver medal in the kumite (sparring) category.
His teammate Jenny Diane Pareja contributed a silver in the kata and a bronze in the kumite in her division.
The tournament was participated by various karate-do clubs from around Negros Occidental and parts of Visayas, including Cebu.
After this tournament, Vidal gears up for the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) Season 23’s karatedo event, which will happen later this year.
Vidal isn’t new to competing in various karate-do tournaments. In 2016, he brought home the Philippines’ lone gold medal in the kumite event of the Karate Mayor’s Cup Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Besides that, he also competed in the Hayashi-ha Asia Pacific Karate and Kobudo Championships 2016 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the same year. He won the gold medal in the kumite event.
