Spanish soldiers fired  canons at nipa huts while making their way to the beach of  Mactan.

Datu Lapu Lapu led natives armed with spears and bows and arrows in confronting  their unwanted guests led by Portugese Ferdinand Magellan.

Over 7,000 spectators cheered the mock battle where   Lapu Lapu kill Magellan, in yesterday’s re-enactment of the historical battle of April 27, 1521.

This year’s Kadaugan sa Mactan opened with a floral offering led by Mayor Paz Radaza at Lapu Lapu’s monument at the city’s Liberty Shrine.

The re-enactment, which featured actors Vin Abrenica and Joseph Bitangcol who played the roles of chieftain Lapu Lapu and Magellan, followed at 10 a.m.

Over the weekend, thousands  joined the city’s street party which featured the annual “Rampada” dance competition, patterned after Brazil’s street dancing.

Barangay Babag won first place in the “Rampada” barangay category and took home cash of P200,000 and a trophy.

Other winners were Buaya in  2nd place, Looc in 3rd place followed by Pusok and Ibo.

“We expected a bigger  crowd this year since  we  doubled the venue area by extending the street party to the Hoops dome,” said Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Harry Don Radaza.

In the open category, the Mactan Dynamics Dance Company won first place and a cash prize of P250,000.
