THE Cebu City Council yesterday passed a resolution pushing for an inspection of all warehouses and stores for fake rice.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Alvin Dizon, also urged the regional offices of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and National Food Authority (NFA) to conduct an information drive to warn the public.

“It’s actually a proactive move so the public is properly warned on the serious threats and danger of fake and synthetic rice. It is urgent to warn the public to be vigilant against the proliferation of fake and synthetic rice in the local market,” Dizon said.

He said an inspection of all warehouses and stores will identify the illegal peddlers of fake rice.

The council passed the resolution in view of reports of fake rice entering the Philippines through Davao. The fake rice is allegedly a mixture of sweet potatoes and plastic or industrial synthetic resin from China. Resin is not safe for human consumption.
