For their active role in the promotion and development of Filipino skilled workers, the Visayan Electric Company (Veco) was recently awarded Industry Category Visayas champion in the 2015 Kabalikat Awards by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda).
The Kabalikat Awards recognizes individuals and institutions that promote and strengthen the technical vocational education and training in the country.
“We’ve had around a hundred linemen trainees from Tesda since more than two years ago,” said Veco vice president for Engineering Val Saludes.
In their partnership with Tesda, Veco not only provides free skills training to electricians but also gives them monetary allowances.
Transportation to and from the Veco Development Academy, the company’s training facility in Sirao, Cebu City, is also provided. The training lasts for 28 days.
Saludes said Veco has already spent more than a million pesos on this partnership.
Currently, Veco has absorbed five students from Tesda as regular employees.
Veco was also awarded second in the national level. Tesda Secretary Joel Villanueva handed the award to Veco chief operating officer Anton Perdices during Tesda’s 21st anniversary celebration.
