Daanbantayan steps up drive against dengue

DAANBANTAYAN town in northern Cebu is stepping up its campaign against dengue amid reports that it remains in the list of local government units in Central Visayas with the highest number of dengue cases.

The Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RHU) of the Department of Health (DOH) 7 said Daanbantayan has 343 cases and one death recorded due to dengue.

Daanbantayan Mayor Auguso Corro said they are closely coordinating with the Provincial Health Office (PHO) and the Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) to reduce dengue cases in their area.

Corro said they managed to buy one misting machine used alongside those borrowed from the Capitol to clean areas identified as problematic.

“We conduct misting operations where we see concentration of cases,” Corro said.

Mayor Corro said barangay health workers (BHW) and midwives are on standby to respond initially to residents displaying dengue symptoms.

But he said they should be brought to hospitals in Cebu City which are better equipped to deal with the disease.

Still, Corro said the district hospital in Daanbantayan can prioritize indigent patients who cannot afford to undergo treatment in Cebu City.

Indigent patients may avail of free check-up and laboratory services at the town’s Regional Health Unit, the mayor said.

Aside from Daanbantayan, also in the list are Toledo City, Liloan, and Balamban, among others.
