Cebu Daily News publisher Abelardo S. Ulanday

Publisher’s Message: Abelardo S. Ulanday

IT’S not easy to write a message that can encompass what a regional newspaper like Cebu Daily News has done and achieved for the last 18 years. I’ve been appointed Publisher for this paper only last week so, to be honest, I don’t think I can really say or write much about its past.

This is not to ignore or belittle its impact on the life and culture of Cebu and of Cebuanos. CDN would not have existed, much less thrived, if it hasn’t mattered to the daily lives of its readers that include local leaders, politicians, businessmen and various interest groups. But how actually it did so maybe a matter of conjecture if I write about it myself because I actually watched CDN grow and develop from a vantage point in Makati City.

There’s a lot of difference when you’ve been up close and personal, to borrow the title of a movie, to a paper like CDN than just monitoring it from afar.

So this message is more like a look into what we would like to do and achieve in the future, say in the next 18 or more years.

We all know that the media landscape, both globally and locally, is constantly changing. Advances in technology have prompted media owners and publishers to review not only their titles and assets but their operations as well. Social media has become a disruptive process that has affected print, broadcast, online and digital platforms.

But handled rightly, it can be the key to the continued existence and viability of any media product.

The change process within CDN has begun with the appointment of a new editorial team. The next step is to review our structure and operations—both in the Business and Editorial groups—and align them to the goals and objectives we will soon draw up. These will serve as our guidelines for growth, stability, and leadership in Cebu’s thriving media landscape.

We’d like to see a dynamic CDN that is able to report news and stories relevant to the needs and dreams of our readers, that will be available to them anytime anywhere, on as many touchpoints as possible.

We’d like to see a CDN that will continue to enlighten and empower our readers, thus enable them to act more intelligently. All these to be done grounded on the principles of fearless journalism, excellence, fairness, objectivity, and editorial independence.

I’m excited and challenged by these prospects of CDN in the future.

Meanwhile, join us in celebrating the 18th anniversary of Cebu Daily News!
