CEC-A/ACY Shipping/Koi Herbal and CEC-B/PTT/Roadstar refused to go silently into the night as they survived elimination games and forged do-or-die matches in the semifinal round of the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association (Cecaba) 15th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup at the CEC Gym last Tuesday.

CEC-B dealt Batch 1999/Southchoice Inc. just its second loss in more than two years, 93-83, while CEC-A toppled Batch 1995/New Millennium Hardware, 72-68.

The two best-of-three series now stand at 1-1 with Game 3 set tomorrow at the same venue. Victors will advance to the championship round, which will be a best-of-three affair.

CEC-A and CEC-A both dropped their series-openers but defied tremendous pressure in Game 2 to keep their final championship berths alive.

CEC-B had a balanced attack with Roger Donayre Jr. leading the way with 19 points. Rex Allinson pitched in 17 markers, Kent Uy donated 13, while Alfred Reyes and Don Cadorna added 12 and 10, respectively.

Mark Bukiron scattered 30 markers, Earn Saguindel dropped 27 points and Albert Uy had 13 for Batch ’99, whose two-year title reign is under threat.

Batch ’99 never tasted a single defeat in winning two straight titles until it lost to Batch 1998/Kaking last March 7.

The loss ended the defending champion’s amazing 42-game win streak.

Paul Cabellon, on the other hand, keyed CEC-A’s crucial win by firing 18 points. He was backed by Robin Chu and Gino Abella, who finished with 14 and 12 markers, respectively.

Donald Anthony Ting topped Batch ’95 with 24 points, Joseph Yu contributed 18 and Dean Dy Teves had 11.
