The Project Happy Feet Slipper Race will be held on June 25 at the Crimson Resort & Spa in Mactan.
Conceptualized by Project Happy Feet and first launched in 2011 in Singapore, Project Happy Feet Slipper Race is a non-competitive walk in slippers (flip flops) to raise funds for the education and training of underprivileged children and youths.
This unique fundraiser is inspired by many school children living in rural places who walk more than 3 kilomters to school either barefooted or in slippers.
“By getting participants to walk in a similar distance in slippers, we hope people will put themselves in the shoes (or slippers!) of these underprivileged children and do their part to give the children chance at education and a better future,” the Crimson Resort & Spa said in a statement.
“For the younger participants, we hope they walk away with an appreciation for what they have been given, and feel inspired and empowered to do something for their counterparts who are less privileged,” it added.
The slipper race was first conducted in 2013 and has supported more than 10 scholars from elementary to college.
One of the scholars already graduated from BS Education last March and is now being supported by the program as she does her review for the licensure exam.
This year, Crimson has once again chosen Bantay Bata 163 as their beneficiary.
“Although not really competitive in nature, we call it a race, because we hope to send the message that there is great urgency for us to do something about education for the underprivileged children around the world, and that we should race against time to give our support and make that positive impact now,” the resort said.
To participate in the slipper race, participants must form a group of five and pay the donation of P5,000. All proceeds will be donated to the beneficiary.
The race this year will be in the form of a minute to win it challenge, with participants completing various individual and team challenges in under a minute to complete the race.
