USJ-R, Southwestern U rule Cesafi badminton tourney

THE Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras and the University of San Jose -Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars each won two gold medals to dominate the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) college badminton tournament which came to a close yesterday at the Metrosports Center in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City.

SWU’s Android Tingson thwarted USJ-R’s Charmaine Villa in the singles A final, 21–7, 21–12. University of San Carlos’ (USC) Aeryn Opsima finished third in the category.

In the women’s doubles play, Jhunna Francisco and Emily Judilla defeated the USJ-R pair of Mia Lyn Rizon and Kim Soon to notch another gold for the Cobras.

Despite the two championship losses, the Jaguars were still able to finish the final day of competition strong as Kent Cabural trounced University of Cebu’s (UC) Niño Jay Quindao, 21–11, 21–11.

Eloisa Maquilan accounted for USJ-R’s second gold after she defeated USC’s Jenny Rose Ramirez in the women’s tertiary singles B event, 21-12, 21-17.

UC’s Dexter Opalla and Aljun Penute, on the other hand, topped the men’s doubles by trouncing USJ-R’s Rex Paolo Mangubat and Alfred Armamento, 16–21, 21–13, 21–11.
