Highly touted high school stud Jancork Cabahug has been given the green light to play in the collegiate division for the reigning champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers.
Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy confirmed the development, saying Cabahug had passed the screening process.
The new amendment to the rule regarding the playing eligibility of student-athletes that are over the age limit cut-off for high school but are still in high school due to the establishment of senior high, paved the way for Cabahug’s inclusion into the lineup of the powerhouse Lancers.
“A senior high school student-athlete who is over the age limit cut-off for the high school division is eligible to play in the collegiate division of the same school system in which he/she is enrolled,” the amended rule states.
The 19-year-old Cabahug expressed his joy with the news.
“I feel blessed because that I was given the opportunity to showcase my skills at the college level,” said the versatile 6-foot-1 forward.
UV assistant coach Van Halen Parmis said that Cabahug’s addition to the team is a welcome sight. He believes Cabahug fits well with the team, especially since the latter had previously teamed up with his elder counterparts in several tournaments during the offseason for the last two years.
“Jancork is a mature player who has been playing in out-of-town tournaments for several years already. We won’t have a difficult time integrating him into the team since he is already familiar with the system that we run,” Parmis said.
Parmis added that he felt Cabahug deserves his spot on the team, especially after shunning numerous suitors from the UAAP and the NCAA.
“There were three UAAP teams and two NCAA schools that were eager to recruit him but he chose to stay with UV. Jancork chose to stand by our program and that kind of loyalty means a lot to us.”
