Census to cover north Cebu storm victims

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) will conduct a census in 45 Yolanda-hit barangays in northern Cebu.

This will help the government asses what residents need more than eight months after the supertyphoon struck the country.

Provincial Statistics Officer Fermo Deputado said the census is in line with the request of Rehabilitation Sec. Panfilo Lacson for additional information on the affected areas.

“He needed the information to determine what other interventions the government can do to address the current needs of the families there,” said Deputado.

Selected barangays belong to the city of Bogo and the towns of Daanbantayan, San Remegio, Sta. Fe, Madridejos and Bantayan.

Deputado said the census will detail the respondents’ current living conditions, including their livelihood before and after Yolanda, and their current location.

Some of the questions are: “Do you live in a relocation site? Or do you live in the same area since the typhoon? Do you have any intention to permanently reside in the relocation site?”

The survey will describe the state of housing units, garbage disposal and source of water supply.

The survey will be conducted from Aug. 4 to 30.

Results will be sent to Lacson by September, he said.

The census in northern Cebu will be simultaneously conducted with the pilot testing of the August 2015 Population Census to save on expenses.

“This is actually hitting two birds with one stone,” he said.

The PSA, formerly known as the National Statistics Office, has set aside P2 million for the pilot census in Cebu.

At most 158 data enumerators and regular facilitators will be fielded.
In Central Visayas, only Yolanda-hit areas will be surveyed since this will yield data that both the agency and Lacson need.
