MORE than 70 individuals from the different groups took part in the coastal cleanup activity commemorating the 117th anniversary of Independence Day last Friday at the Maribago public beach in Lapu-Lapu City.

The local government of Maribago initiated the activity with non-government organization Sustainable Energy and Enterprise Development for Communities (SEED4Com) led by Dann Diez as convenor.

“We want to instill in the minds of the people especially the youth that we also want our environment to be free from trash,” said Maribago barangay councilor Arvin Abing.

SEED4Com tapped various organizations, such as the ABS-CBN’s Bantay Kalikasan, Youth for a Better Earth, Sustainable Energy and Enterprise Development, USC Science Education Student’s Organization, USC Safety First, the VSO Bahaginan and Let’s Do It Philippines to join the project.

Abing said their barangay has been partnering with the University of San Carlos (USC) and Cebu Normal University’s Supreme Student Council for their environmental protection activities.

Abing said the activity, dubbed as “Basuralympics”-Freedom from Trash kicked off with a flag raising.

Around 75 kilos of trash composed of empty mineral water bottles, cellophane bags and other waste were collected by the participants.
