At least 50 students from the University of the Philippines Cebu held yesterday a rally outside the school campus in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City to protest the “rampant” extrajudicial killings as the government intensifies its anti-illegal drugs campaign.

“The government should not mimic the actions of the criminals. Justice should be served. Kill drugs, not people,” said Akbayan Youth representative and former UP Cebu Student Council chairperson Justin Balane, who was one of the rallyists.

Students, who were carrying placards and a tarpaulin with messages saying “kill drugs, not people,” gathered at 4:30 p.m. to show their opposition to the extradujicial killings.

Leonilo dela Pena, 48, a parent who was standing across the street from the rallyists, said he agreed with what the students’ views on extrajudicial killings.

Dela Pena, who watched and listened to the chants of the students while waiting for a passenger jeepney with his son, said he agreed with the rally and it was for a good cause.

The protest action, which ended at past 5 p.m., was attended by members of the Nagkahiusang Kusog sa Estudyante, Union of Progressive Students, and UP Justice Advocates, and Math Society and UP Psychology Majors Association.
