Some students of nearby university are forced to wear face masks during classes due to the stench coming from the newly opened sanitary landfill in Barangay Inayawan, Cebu City.

Photos posted by a teacher from the University of Cebu (UC) – Maritime Education and Training Center (METC) in Barangay Mambaling of his students wearing masks have been circulating on Facebook since Wednesday afternoon.

“UC-METC (Mambaling Campus) scene at 5 pm during my Marine Environment class. Wearing masks is the only way to be protected from air pollution caused by the Inayawan dumpsite foul odor,” wrote Nuel Pacudan Crucio on his Facebook status.

In an interview, he said the smell from the landfill has been there for years.

Sometimes, he added, it disappeared.

But he said the smell worsened when the landfill reopened last June, prompting him to suggest just wear face masks during his class from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

“Hope this message gets the Cebu city government’s attention,” Crucio said in his post.
