A 33-year-old female passenger died past midnight yesterday about nine hours after the Ceres bus she boarded on was struck by a 10-wheeler truck in Barangay Uling, Naga City, southern Cebu.

Charito Calago, a resident of Dumanjug town, southwest Cebu, was rushed to South General Hospital in Naga City along with 23 other passengers immediately after the accident took place around 5:45 p.m. last Tuesday.

She, however, died at the hospital due to multiple injuries past 2 a.m. yesterday, said PO3 Michael Villaromea of the Naga City Police Station.

Charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and multiple physical injuries will be filed against truck driver Francisco Efren Marababol Jr., who was placed under hospital arrest after the incident.

“The truck driver was also injured, so for humanitarian reason, we allowed him to stay in the hospital while we prepare the charges against him,” Villaromea said in a phone interview.

The Ceres bus driven by Jerson Adolfo was on its way to Toledo City when it was hit by the truck whose brakes reportedly failed.

A multicab parked along the street was also hit by the truck.

The multicab, fortunately, had no passengers at that time.

Ceres bus passengers who sustained minor injuries were discharged from the hospital while the others continue to recuperate at the hospital.
