THE SOUTHWESTERN University – Phinma (SWU-Phinma) Cobras ruled the secondary division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) badminton tournament over the weekend at the Metrosports Center in Lahug.

SWU-Phinma snared five gold medals in the two-day tournament while the University of San Carlos (USC) and University of Cebu (UC) collared one each.

Ryan Doromal showed the way for the Cobras’ dominant run as he defeated UC’s Russel Siarot in the boy’s singles A category, 21–14, 21–12, for the crown.

His teammate Jinny Nieves, however, wasted a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals and bowed to USC’s Chelsea Akiatan. Akiatan trounced Nieves in their first encounter, 23–21, 21–12, then won again in their second match, 22–20, 21–14.

The Cobras’ boys’ duo of Anthone Pete Abellana and Harvey Tungol won over USC’s Paul Ouano and Neil Villarante, 21–19, 21–18, while Elloise Canillo and Tricia Opon triumphed over UC’s Zinah Bejasa and Karyl Rio, 21–11, 21–10, in the girls’ doubles.

In the mixed doubles battle, Siarot and Bejasa produced UC’s lone gold as they pounded SWU’s Mike Maratas and Kristelle Verallo, 21–15, 21–11.

Wileyto Yray also contributed to the Cobras’ medal haul as he emerged victorious in the boy’s singles B over Don Bosco Technological Center’s (DBTC) Patrick Cabañero, 21–15, 21–8.
Kathleen Verallo, on the other hand, scored an easy 21–12, 21–12 ousting of USC’s Mitzi Montalvo in the girl’s singles B play.

In college results, University of San Jose–Recoletos’ (USJ-R) tandem of Peter Almirol and Agatha Amante reigned supreme in the mixed doubles category after beating the USC pair of Christian Cayna and Sheina Joy Nabua, 21–7, 21–9.

USC’s Michael Quibranza spoiled his twice-to-beat edge and lost to USJ-R’s Archangelo Ouano, 21–16, 18–21, 17–21, in the first game and 16–21, 15–21, in the second game.
