THE Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles ended a three-year title drought and did it in a resounding fashion as they dethroned defending champion Don Bosco Technological Center (DBTC) via a 1-0 triumph in their championship duel in the secondary division of the 2016 Cesafi football tournament yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) football pitch.

Leo Maquiling delivered the winning goal for the Magis Eagles as he found the back of the net in the 13th minute of the second half.

“We lost to them twice and now we have the trophy back and I am very proud of this victory,” said 15-year-old Maquiling, the skipper of Magis Eagles.

“My mind-set was really to win back the title and win as a team and bring back the glory to the school,” he added.

SHS-AdC last won the title in 2012 at the expense of University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF). Maquiling went on to clinch the Most Valuable Player (MVP) accolade while his teammates Paolo Montesclaros and Jack Sembrano were named best defender and best goal keeper, respectively.

DBTC’s Glen Thomas Ramos won the best midfielder award. University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED), on the other hand, bagged the third place trophy after trouncing USPF, 5-1.

In the collegiate division, University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) nipped University of the Visayas (UV), 2-1, in the ongoing eliminations.

Eugene Vicente keyed USJ-R’s second victory in the tournament in five games by scoring two goals.

UV now has two wins, two losses and four draws. The two teams’ meeting ended up a 0-0 draw. Defending champion University of Cebu and USPF fought to a 0-0 draw.
