Amlan, a sleepy fourth class municipality in Negros Oriental that has offered to take Cebu City Zoo’s animals once it will be closed, apparently is more than qualified to make that offer.
Amlan, which is just a 30-minute ride north of Dumaguete City, operates one of the country’s best public zoos, the Dreamland Nature and Adventure Park (DNAP).
The park, a joint venture between the municipal government and the privately owned DNAP, has 28 personnel, including a veterinary doctor. It houses over a hundred species of birds and animals in the 25-hectare park located in Barangay Silab.
The Dreamland Nature and Adventure Park recently signed an agreement with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) that makes the park a repository of animals rescued and confiscated from wildlife traffickers.
The Amlan local government has taken an interest in taking Cebu City Zoo animals after Mayor Tomas Osmeña announced his plan to close the seven-hectare animal park in Barangay Kalunasan.
