FOR trying to earn extra lunch money, a 15-year-old died after being struck by a boulder while inside a seven-foot-deep hole digging for limestone in Sitio Kanuma, Barangay Bungon in Tabuelan town, Cebu, at 11 a.m. last Saturday.

PO3 Jerome Millor of the Tabuelan police identified the victim as Girbin Montebon, a Grade 7 student and a resident of Bungon, a mountain barangay located 15 kilometers from the town proper.

Millor said Montebon was with two teenage neighbors digging for limestone for Marvin Tulod, a 36-year-old baker who promised to pay P10 per sack of limestone to the three boys.

Tulod was supposed to use the limestone as filling material for his yard.

Montebon and the two boys managed to fill half a sack with limestone when the accident occurred.

Millor said one of the boys told him that he was about to climb up the hole when the stone he clung on to gave in and caused a boulder from the surface to fall and hit Montebon on his back, severely injuring him.

The two boys managed to remove the boulder from Montebon and called their parents who lived nearby.

They rushed Montebon to the Tuburan District Hosptial, but he failed to make it. Most of the residents who lived there were farmers, Millor said. Tulod was not around when Millor visited his home.
