Balletcenter presents Coppelia

ONGOING to Cafe Marco of the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel for lunch and dinner buffet is KHANA, a culinary journey highlighting Indian cuisine. It opened on Tuesday and is on up to October 30.

Tomorrow over lunch at the Marco Polo, Balletcenter holds a press conference to announce the presentation of the full length ballet Coppelia. There will be one week end in November at SM Seaside, and another week end in December at the Ayala Center.

We’ll tell you more in a future issue. Just keep posted.

Last Sunday from 2 to 5pm there was a display of sleekly elegant eye wear with the Linda Farrow brand, at the Pig and Palm in the MSY Holdings Tower, Cebu Business Park.

Mariquita Salimbangon Yeung was there as proceeds from the sales would go to her charitbale foundation which among other activities sponsors Operation Smile. The foundation will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year with a program of events. Meanwhile, there was the Linda Farrow collection. The interest was on the array of sunglasses.

Champagne and croquettes were served throughout. With Mariquita was husband Carlos, and children Carla and Chris McKowen. Seen: Tamsin Booth, Tessie Javier, Belinda Wong, Marilou Ong, Joel and Carla del Prado.

“Come over to Pig and Palm, any time,” Carla and Chris told us some time ago. “Make sure mom is there.” Mom is Mariquita who in the meantime says she’ll be there at Pig and Palm on November 5, at 7pm. That is Carlos’s birthday. We’ll be there.

Milagring Sembrano turned 95 last October 6 and celebrated it along with her three-year-old great grandson. At home, in Ranudo Street Specialties of the house were served – the fresh lumpia and the fried empanadas.

Of course, there were platefuls of Millie’s famous roasted peanuts. You start and never end. Despite being a rainy day the lechon was thoroughly crispy.

Millie sat with dear friend Tita Nolasco Deen, Marose Borromeo who brought the empanaditas from an old family recipe, Mem La O, Pina Poblete and Tina Ebrada.

The arrival of Cit-Cit Unchuan Toledo meant boxes of Tocino del Cielo which she makes from a recipe handed down through generations.

Speaking of birthdays, on October 12 it was that of former Cebu governor Gwen Garcia, now Representative of Cebu’s 3rd district, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Congress. She celebrated it on the following Saturday, October 15.

Venue was Circa 1900 Casa Dos which originally was the stately home of Don Agustin and Doña Beatriz Jereza. It is now an elegant restaurant whose main feature is a graceful staircase.

It was a pleasure sitting next to the Hon. Pablo Garcia, former governor of Cebu and like his daughter Gwen, a Representative for Cebu’s 3rd district, and Deputy Speaker of the House in his time. He remains a sharp conversationalist.

In the same table were honorary consul of France Michel Lhuillier with his wife Amparito, Rosebud Sala, Teresin Mendezona and Carmen Campbell.

At a nearby table were Gwen’s classmates from St. Theresa’s College, Myra Magsaysay and Marissa Fernan among them. The ladies of the press sat with Pinky and Winglip Chang who made a blanket invitation to lunch at Kuya Jay along Escario Street.

There they went – Nelia Neri, Flor Ynclino, Cookie Newman, and Chinggay Utzurrum. Quite a feast – grilled scallops, Bulalo soup, crispy pata and whole roasted chicken later chopped.

Dessert was a towering glass of halo-halo which was mostly ice cream, with the usual varied condiments, and a leche flan square to top it off.

In three years where are now 50 Kuya Kay restaurants mostly in the Metro Manila area, and there will be more assures Winglip.

At the rate we’re going to lunches and dinners we’ll have to do more laps in the swimming pool every morning. And i’m not even a food writer.

I’ve been asked to say more about Little Amsterdam in Sirao. I’ll have to climb that mountain again. Meanwhile here is a photo of owner Elena Sy Chua with Perla Agudo.
