CEBUANO national team members Nica Garces and Sal Luji Estrada will gun for top honors in the 2016 World Taekwondo Junior Championships, which starts today in Burnaby, Canada.

Garces and Estrada, who will be competing in the prestigious tournament for the first time, will try to help the country author its best finish in the competition pitting the best young taekwondo athletes in the world.

“I’m hoping that our batch will make history in this tournament,” the National University jin Garces told Cebu Daily News. “I will just do my best and use everything that my coaches taught me.”

The Philippines has never won a gold medal in the tournament whose best finish so far was a silver.

The 17-year-old Garces will be competing in the bantamweight class while University of Cebu’s Estrada will be seeing action in the lightweight division.

The two left for Canada last Saturday.
