CEBU Gov. Hilario Davide III said storing condoms in school clinics sends the wrong message to school children insofar as the campaign against AIDS and underage pregnancy is concerned.

“Of course I am not in favor of that. You are giving wrong signal to the children. Why not build classrooms instead of buying and distributing condoms to school clinics? That’s needed more in my personal opinion,” he told reporters yesterday.

The governor was reacting to reports about the planned distribution of condoms by the Department of Health (DOH) to school clinics in the country to help stem the tide of AIDS and underage pregnancy cases.

“This is my personal opinion. You are giving them the wrong idea that it’s okay to have sex as long as you are protected. Raising awareness on these issues is better in school,” Davide said.

Both Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma and Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale also spoke out against the DOH plan while Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña supported the initiative./USJ-R Intern Vanisa P. Soriano
