Wenceslao looks to rebound vs undefeated Japanese foe

By: Glendale G. Rosal February 03,2017 - 10:29 PM

RODEL Wenceslao of Team Joeric Boxing looks to get back on the winning track when he faces unbeaten Japanese prospect Hiroki Okada on March 4 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

The 23-year-old Wenceslao, who holds a record of 11 wins, 13 losses and 1 draw with 4 knockout wins, has lost his last two fights, the last one being a knockout defeat to Adones Aguelo in Maasin City last year. Before that, he also lost to Adones Cabalquinto in Davao City by decision.

Wenceslao’s promoter, Joeric Calisang, admitted that his ward’s upcoming fight is a tough one, especially since the Japanese is a known knockout artist, having won 10 of his 14 wins by knockouts.

Calisang, though, believes that Wenceslao is capable of staging an upset, like what he did in April of 2016 when he scored a second round technical knockout win against Chinese Kun Wang in Jinghong, China.

“I still believe in him even though he recently lost his fights because he did it to the Chinese boxer last year. So it’s not impossible for Rodel to win against the Japanese,” Calisang said.

Calisang said that if Wenceslao wins, it will boost his rankings in the lightweight division.

Wenceslao has been training since December under veteran trainer Edsel Tuñacao at the EdselMike/Team Joeric Boxing Gym in Mandaue City.
