Sportsman Oscar “Boying” Rodriguez is tapping the scenic island of Camotes to host the National Age Group Triathlon (NAGT) Cebu Leg on March 26.
Rodriguez who also chairs the Danao City Sports Commission revealed that the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) has thrown its full support behind Cebu’s hosting of the race that will also serve as the qualifying event for the Philippine National Team that will compete in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
The 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Around 150-200 triathletes are expected to join this race that will have three categories: the NAGT Sprint, NAGT mini sprint and the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) category.
The NAGT Sprint category will have an 800-meter swim, 20k bike and 6k run while the NAGT mini sprint and the YOG qualifiers categories will have a 400m swim, 10k bike and 3k run.
The race will start and finish at the Santiago Bay in San Francisco, Camotes Island.
Rodriguez also revealed that all current members of the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) training pool will be seeing action in the event.
“The venue for this year’s NAGT will be held in the pristine beaches of Camotes Island so we are expecting more participants compared to last year,” Boying said adding that most triathletes prefer Camotes. Danao City hosted last year’s competitions.
“We are expecting triathletes coming from Manila, Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Bacolod to compete. We are also expecting triathletes from Talisay City and Danao City to vie in the race,” Rodriguez told CDN. “The triathletes from Talisay and Danao are the ones who joined our training camp last year in Plantation Bay,” Rodriguez added.
The Danao City sports czar also revealed that he and his team will be going to Camotes Island to inspect the race course and start the preparations there. The last time a triathlon race was held in Camotes Island was in 2013.
Early registration fee is pegged at P1,200 which covers until March 17 while those who will register until March 22 will have to pay P2,000. The first 20 triathletes to register will get a free boat pass going to Camotes Island courtesy of Jomalia Shipping.
