THE private operator of Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) sees even more opportunities for the gateway in key markets after it was recently recognized for its marketing and route development achievements.

Last March 20, MCIA received the distinction “Highly Commended for Excellence in Airport Marketing” in the Four-to-20 million passenger category at the Routes Asia 2017 Marketing Awards held in Okinawa, Japan.

“Having come from every individual that comprise(s) the best of the global airline network planning community, it is an acknowledgement that our vision to be counted among the very best in the world is an attainable reality,” said Louie Ferrer, president of the GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC), the private company operating and managing the MCIA.

In a statement, Ferrer said the commendation opens MCIA to a range of opportunities in key markets as they look forward to the opening of a world-class terminal building in June 2018.

With the construction of a new passenger terminal proceeding as scheduled, the company is looking to open new routes connecting Cebu to Australia, Europe and more Asean countries within the next two years. Expanding connections to China, Japan and South Korea are also being studied for implementation soon.

During the March 19 to 21 Routes Asia 2017 event, GMCAC officials met with several airline companies from Europe, Australia and Asia.

Discussions were held with airport operators in Japan, Australia and Sweden to market Cebu as a destination as well as to showcase MCIA as an ideal gateway to the Philippines.
