Firefighting equipment worth half a million pesos were turned over to Mandaue City government by the Rotary Club of Cebu West at the city hall grounds on Wednesday.
These included 30 fireproof coats with pants and boots and four sets of self-contained breathing apparatus. The donated firefighting gears are second hand but can still be used for at least five years.
Mayor Gabriel Luis “Luigi” Quisumbing expressed his gratitude to the club for their generosity.
“With these equipment, many lives will be saved as our firefighters will be able to penetrate in thick smoke,” said Quisumbing.
Club president Engr. Vicente Vosotros said they have been donating fire trucks and firefighting equipment as well as computers and other gadgets to the different volunteer fire brigades and some local government units for community development with their partner, Rotary World Health of Canada.
The rotary facilitated the transport and payment of customs duties of the donated equipment.
“We have chosen Mandaue for this donation because they already have trained firefighters (to handle the equipment),” said Vosotros.
He said the equipment were estimated to cost P2 million if purchased brand new.
City Disaster Risk Reduction Management officer Felix Suico said they already have 12 existing fireproof vests and a few self-contained breathing apparatus but these are not enough in case simultaneous fires occur.
