AND WHY NOT?

The arrival in Cebu City yesterday of at least 14 families, or 62 internally displaced persons, who escaped from the raging gun battle in Marawi City between state troops and the Maute-IS terror group, is now the subject of a heated exchange among netizens.

While many netizens expressed happiness and relief, especially at the sight of young children as among the survivors when they arrived at Pier 5 on board a Trans Asia Shipping vessel, one netizen, Grenalyn Alcantara, wrote, “Why here in Cebu???”

She immediately gained the ire of other netizens.

Netizen Elias Tabuclaon was quick to answer: “And why not?”

Another netizen, Mayang Ruiz-Villacrusis, also replied: “Basing naa silay kaila dri sa cebu. last time i checked, anyone is welcome here in cebu (Maybe they know people here in Cebu. Last time I checked, anyone is welcome here in Cebu).”

G-cleff Pasicaran was more direct and commented: “Mao sya nlng kaha ipadala sa marawi ipaon sa gubat.usa rata tanan.ma christiano man o muslim.dapat magtinabangay (Maybe we can send her to Marawi City as bait in the ongoing gun battle. We are all one. Christian or Muslim, we should help each other).”

To these, Alcantara replied:

“All of u guys are good samaritan so what are u doing in helping ur fellow pinoys esp. those from marawi-affected by the maute clash???? instead of blah blah blah, open the doors of ur home for them. it is safe as u guys claim (All of you guys are good Samaritans, so what are you doing in helping your fellow Pinoys especially those from Marawi, affected by the Maute clash? Instead of so much talk, open your doors for them. If it is safe as you guys claim).”
