AROUND 50 young wood pushers will test their skills in the Batang Pinoy Regional Finals Chess tournament on July 1-2 at the Robinson’s Galleria Cebu.

The tournament, to be hosted by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) will adopt the seven-round Swiss system format and is open for elementary chess players.

Tournament arbiter Marvin Ruelan said that some of Cebu’s noted young chessers including Palarong Pambansa gold medalists Alphecca Gonzales and Regina Catherine Quiñanola along with John Lester Belano, Jave Merick Peteros and Aaron Resma are the tournament’s top contenders.

Cash prizes await the winning wood pushers as well as slots to the Cebu Province team in this year’s Batang Pinoy National Finals, the venue of which is yet to be announced.

The tournament will kick off at 1 p.m.
