BARANGAY tanods in Sambag II and Bario Luz were given one week to clear the sidewalks of ambulant vendors in their areas.
In a news conference, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña warned that he will cut off their allowance should they fail to do so.
Osmeña earlier threatened to suspend the cash allowance of tanods who didn’t help in the city’s anti-drug campaign.
“Obviously they don’t want to run after drug pushers so we will make them work the other way. We should get our money’s worth,” he said.
The city is spending over P4 million a month for the cash allowances to the tanods which the mayor said was “not obligatory” on the city’s part.
The city has 20 tanods for each of its 80 barangays and each tanod receives P4,000 a month.
Councilor Dave Tumulak, chairman of the City Council’s committee on public order and safety, said there are a lot of barangays that are not apprehending illegal vendors.
He said the barangay officials in Barangays Kalubihan, Sto. Niño, Sta. Cruz and Punta Prinsesa should also deal with ambulant vendors.
Tumulak said the stalls of ambulant vendors constrict the sidewalks for pedestrians.
